The Woodpecker Ai-Pex Apex Locator is a modern, high-precision diagnostic device used in endodontics (root canal therapy) that also integrates a pulp vitality testing function. It is manufactured by Woodpecker Dental.
The Woodpecker Ai Pex Apex Locator’s main purpose is to accurately measure the working length of the root canal, which is essential for successful root canal treatment.
Key Features and Technology
2-in-1 Functionality (Apex Locator + Pulp Tester):
Apex Locator: Uses advanced Multi-Frequency Network Impedance Measurement technology for highly accurate root canal length determination.
Pulp Tester: Includes a Constant Current Electric Pulp Tester (EPT) to assess the vitality of the tooth pulp, which provides a more reliable measurement than thermal tests.
High Accuracy and Stability:
Utilizes a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chip with an advanced digital circuit to ensure high precision (often cited as 98% accuracy) and faster information processing.
Features Auto-Calibration upon startup.
Measurement Reliability:
The multi-frequency technology allows for accurate measurements regardless of canal conditions—whether the root canal is dry, wet, or contaminated with blood or residual pulp. This provides flexibility during clinical procedures.
Endo Motor Connectivity (Integration):
The Ai-Pex can be connected to compatible endo motors (electric handpieces). This allows the clinician to have real-time observation of the file's position on the screen during the shaping process and can activate automatic safety functions (like Auto Reverse or Auto Stop) when the file reaches the apical limit.
User Interface and Design:
Large Color Screen: Features a 3.8-inch LCD touch screen with a clear, multi-color display that visually indicates the file's position relative to the apex.
Sound Recognition: Emits audible beeps that increase in frequency as the file tip nears the apical foramen, helping the dentist rely on sound in addition to visual feedback.
Magnetic Base: Has a magnetic adsorption base that is 360° rotatable for easy adjustment of the viewing angle.
The Ai-Pex is designed to streamline endodontic diagnosis and treatment by combining two critical measurement tools into one precise, user-friendly device.
Pulp Tester Mode - Electric Pulp Testing (PT Mode)
Constant Current Source: The device uses a Constant Current Source for electric pulp testing. Constant-current EPTs are superior to constant-voltage types in terms of accuracy for determining pulpal viability.
Procedure: To test pulp vitality, the device is switched to PT mode, the probe is coated with a conductive agent (like toothpaste), and placed at the 1/3 position of the tooth neck. The vitality is then determined by comparing the pulse values with adjacent teeth.
Pulp Probes: The device includes two different size pulp probes (a large 2.6 mm and a small 0.5 mm diameter) for convenient operation on different teeth.
Working Modes: There are 4 working modes available , with the quickest speed reaching maximum pulse intensity in 6.2 seconds.
